Year Of Threes For Davey In Allison Legacy Series

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Matthew Davey had a year of threes, so to speak, in the Allison Legacy Racing Series as he completed his second full season in the division.

Davey, 19, finished third in points for the second year in a row, and half of his starts this season ended in third-place finishes – six out of 11, to be exact.

His points total in the final standings was even divisible by three, as well, seeing as how Davey ended the season with 999 points, just shy of cracking the four-figure threshold reached by champion Brett Suggs and series runner-up Ethan Elder.

It might not have been what Davey wanted his season to be remembered by, but his still chuckled when reflecting on the statistics and his year as a whole.

DAVEY SHIFTS CLOSER TO HIS RACING DREAMS IN THE BOJANGLES' SUMMER SHOOTOUT SERIES

Matthew Davey's family support is what fuels his drive to compete against the best grassroots racers in the county at the Bojangles' Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. For the 15-year-old Bandolero driver, racing has become more than a hobby; it has become a way for him to express his true identity.

Davey began competing in go-karts 11 years ago in Arizona. His family soon realized in order for Matthew to pursue his NASCAR dreams, they needed to relocate. With a leap of faith, they moved to Mooresville, North Carolina, getting him one step closer to his aspiration.

"When I came to North Carolina, I was introduced to Bandoleros. Deciding it was time to transition out of the go-karts, my family worked hard to get me into my first Bandolero," said Davey.

Young driver faces challenges with courage

Before Matthew Davey ever stepped into a race car as a child, the Mooresville teenager learned the meaning of intestinal fortitude because of his battle with a rare hip disorder.

Known as Perthes disease, the painful condition, which affects one in 1,200 children, causes a disruption in the blood supply to the hip and results in the hip bone coming out of its socket. Matthew’s mother, Jenny Davey, said her son’s leg had to be fixed surgically, and that left him in a wheelchair for quite a while.

“They had to cut off his thigh, reattach it and rotate the ball in the hip socket,” she explained. “Now he has one leg shorter than the other.”

Davey, however, doesn’t let that bother him, and it definitely doesn’t slow him down.
